The first time I visited Arches National Park, the hike to Delicate Arch was on the top of my list. I arrived at the trailhead a little later than expected and had to park in the reserve parking which was a fair distance from the start of the actual trail. The trail starts out with a slight elevation gain as you head up a smooth rocky trail. As I made my way down the trail occasionally snapping a photo for my Instagram I suddenly realized that the trail I was on had suddenly vanished and I was not on the main trail like I had thought. Somewhere along the way I had made a wrong turn an branched off onto this offshoot. Because the trail was over solid rock I had no footprints I could follow back to where I had diverged from the main trail. In short, I was lost. An hour passed, and my confidence in finding the arch on my own was fading. I even tried using two rocks and a stick to guage my position based off the shadow cast by the sun. I am pretty sure I read about someone doing that in a book I once read. I wandered around, hoping to stumble upon the trail again like some kind of desert explorer. My snack supply was dwindling, and the sun was starting to feel less like a friend and more like a nagging reminder that I was, indeed, lost. Just as I was beginning to consider the merits of living out the rest of my days as a desert hermit, I spotted a group of hikers in the distance—actual, competent hikers on the trail. I casually—and by casually, I mean sprinting—made my way toward them, pretending I hadn’t just spent the last hour wandering in circles. When I finally made it to Delicate Arch, it was as stunning as everyone said it would be. I sat there, catching my breath and enjoying the view, realizing that getting lost had somehow made the experience even more memorable.
