Dive into Discovery: Join the Great Lakes Freshwater Shark Search Project

Are there sharks in the Great Lakes? While it may sound like a fish tale, the Great Lakes Freshwater Shark Search Project (GLFSSP) is diving deep into this intriguing question. Founded by explorer and TikToker Jordan Adrift, this initiative combines scientific curiosity with community engagement to explore the possibility of sharks inhabiting these vast freshwater ecosystems.

🦈 Unveiling the Mystery

The GLFSSP aims to investigate reported sightings and gather data on potential freshwater sharks in the Great Lakes. Notable incidents include a 2008 discovery of a two-foot juvenile blacktip shark in Grand Traverse Bay and a 2024 photograph capturing a dorsal fin near Charlevoix, Michigan.  While these findings are rare, they spark curiosity and underscore the importance of research in understanding our freshwater ecosystems.

Become a Shark Searcher

The success of the GLFSSP hinges on community involvement. Volunteers, known as "Shark Searchers," play a crucial role in monitoring local waters, reporting sightings, and educating others about freshwater sharks. Whether you're a seasoned diver or a curious local, your participation can contribute valuable insights to this unique research endeavor.

Building Community Hubs

Looking ahead, the GLFSSP envisions establishing clubhouses around the Great Lakes region. These spaces will serve as centers for education, community events, and, of course, excellent coffee. By fostering local engagement, these hubs aim to deepen our collective understanding and appreciation of freshwater ecosystems.
