Overview
The remote 70-mile Sawtooth Wilderness Loop trail in Idaho is worth the effort. There is lots of water access and suitable camp spots along the route. Typically the hike can be accomplished in 4-6 days.
We recommend getting on the trail at the Grandjean Campground trailhead.
If you choose to hike the loop clockwise, there is a 10-mile section through a burn area before arriving at Sawtooth Lake. This stretch of the trail is not very scenic. Sawtooth Lake is a sight to see, and it is the most prominent feature in the first half of the hike. We recommend hiking to Sawtooth Lake the first day and camping near the lake for the first night. After Sawtooth Lake, it is about 14 miles to the next two lakes, Barren and Upper Barren Lakes.
Know Before You Hike
Permits: There are self-issue wilderness permits at the trailheads
Camping: Camping is free and there are numerous lakes to camp at along the route. Nearly every lake we found had a good spot to camp nearby.
Shorter Options: The trail can be broken up into a 30- and 40-mile option by taking trails that cut back to the Grandjean trailhead.
Weather: Due to the high elevation the nights get cold and snow when it comes can come in quickly.
Grizzly Bears: This is grizzly bear territory, so we recommend bringing bear spray. Make sure to properly hang your food at night.
After your hike make sure to stop by Peaks & Perks in Stanley Idaho. They literally have the best coffee.
